Top tips to create a touch of gold this autumn by Susan McGowan & DFS Interiors

Susan McGowan, Founder and Creative Director of Ashen & Cloud, and Creative Director of the DFS Interiors Inspiration Centre at the PTSB Ideal home Show this autumn shares her top tips to bringing a touch of gold to our interiors!

As autumn draws upon us, and our evenings edge closer towards the night, the lower sun drenches the landscape in rich and warming hues reminiscent of the Hollywood ‘golden hour’. This lush gold provides the stunning backdrop for the lustrous autumn period, when we are swathed with the richest shades that nature can offer, and all the fruits of the forest, just before the bite of the cold.

This year, the trends of the autumn season strongly lean into the richness of burnt orange and ochre gold, and promise to add bold, yet intrinsic, tones to our homes. Though these shades pack their punch, their homogeneity to our landscape makes them easy to live with, and work wonderfully with neutral shades of all tones.

4 ways to add Autumn Colour to your Home

1. Grab your paintbrush
Paint is one of the easiest and most transformative ways to transform your home. ‘Heart of Gold’ by Kraftsmann Paint is a richly pigmented ochre that would work wonderfully in a sitting room or guest bathroom. Paint the walls and ceiling for maximum impact!

2. Add a statement piece

If your home is neutral, you can dip your toe by gradually adding colour. This could be through accessories, soft furnishings or furniture. DFS have a fantastic rich terracotta velvet fabric which works wonderfully with so many neutral colours. The Padstowe Velvet Accent Chair from the Grand Designs range, with its many sustainable characteristics, displays clean linear lines and side wing detail that can live in both a classical and contemporary setting.

3. Dim the lights

During these months, warmer tones of yellow and orange imbue the sense of warmth and comfort. The ability to dim your lights down to candlelight is also worth exploring. Consider investing in some smart bulbs for a ‘plug and play’ smart lighting system. Products like Phillips Hue can also give you full control of both colour and brightness. Keep your evening lights at eye-level for the perfect glow.  Floor lamps and Table lamps are perfect for this.

4. Layer up

Layering a few extra pieces is the key to working that ‘hygge’ concept. Extra Cushions, throws and bedspreads not only serve their purpose of keeping you warm and cosy, they are also easy to add to your existing scheme. Try mixing and matching fabrics in various autumnal shades and textures for maximum effect.
