Dulux Heritage Colour Consultant Talks All Things Colour and Trends for Autumn 2023

It could be said that one of the first questions in life for many of us asked is… What’s your favourite colour? It was exactly that question that led Jane Witter to pursue a career in colour consultancy with Dulux Heritage Paints.

Jane claims: “Colour is at the fundamental core of the interiors’ journey, so it’s important to get it right from the get-go. It’s a big decision that most people struggle with.” Jane and the Dulux team of consultants will be on hand at the Dulux Heritage Interior Design Hub over the course of the entire show to help people answer that exact question. What is their favourite colour?”

The Dulux Heritage paint range transcends trends capturing colour from across all eras. The 112 luxurious colours include historic timeliness muted and atmospheric shades, as well as contemporary forward-looking tones of the future.

Jane shares her top tips on how to approach colour

Know your starting point
Recognise your starting point in a design project to begin your colour journey. Is it a sofa colour, flooring, piece of art? Work with your starting point to begin teasing out your personal colour palette to build your colour scheme e.g. harmonious, contrasting or tonal.

Understand function & lighting
The function of a room and natural and artificial lighting are important factors when it comes to choosing colour. If I’m pulling a room for a bedroom for example, I might want a deeper more cocooning colour that’s going to feel really cosy at nighttime with bedside lighting.

Your perfect white
When choosing your perfect off-white, the Dulux Heritage collection offers the perfect solution to guide you through your decision making. Begin with the colour palette and look for a colour (or similar) already in your design and at the bottom of that row will be your perfect white to work in.

The overall theme of this autumn’s hub is HipStoric, a trend seen at this Autumn’s Maison & Objet Show. Jane describes the trend as an interior aesthetic that is a blend of the old and new, a clash of the contemporary with antique or vintage pieces that always tell a story. It is personal, individual and well-considered.

Jane’s tips to create an eclectic HipStoric balance

Using complementary colours and material
Use colour to bring eras together by working neutral modern pieces with clean lines with vintage elements that have similar tones. Repaint an old piece of furniture in a bright colour to give it new life or update the handles and hinges to give it a modern twist.

Art & Accessories
These are a great way to unite different styles. Place modern bedside lamps next to a vintage bed or hang an abstract painting above an antique sofa. That’s HipStoric.

Rug Ying & Yang
Work a modern colourful rug by contrasting with vintage furniture, or vice versa, or a vintage rug will add warmth and texture to a modern room.

The Dulux Heritage Colour Consultants will be joined by interior designers Ruth Kennelly, RK Designs and Ciara Drennan, Drennan Interiors who will bring the HipStoric trend to life at the show. Pop by and be inspired.
